چکیده
Question 101: ‘Lord Melchett, in relation to genetic modification, what do you object to and why?’ Lord Melchett, Head of Greenpeace, UK: ‘My Lord Chairman, the fundamental objection is that there are unreliable and unpredictable risks.’ Question 105: ‘How far are you prepared to carry your objections to these developments?’ Lord Melchett: ‘I am happy to answer for Greenpeace [...] Greenpeace opposes all releases to the environment of genetically modified organisms.’ Question 107: ‘Your opposition to the release of GMOs, that is an absolute and definite opposition? It is not one that is dependent on further scientific research or improved procedures being developed or any satisfaction you might get with regard to the safety or otherwise in future?’ Lord Melchett: ‘It is a permanent and definite and complete opposition based on a view that there will always be major uncertainties. It is the nature of the technology, indeed it is the nature of science, that there will not be any absolute proof. No scientist would sit before your Lordships and claim that if they were a scientist at all.’ House of Lords Select Committee on European Communities. 2nd Report: EC Regulation of Genetic Modification in Agriculture.

Seeking balance in the GM crop debate
There’s a continuing gap between attitudes towards genetically modified (GM) crops in Europe and elsewhere. While the US, Canada, China, India and many other countries are adopting them with gusto, most European countries remain at best cautious and at worst completely hostile to their introduction. The reasons for Europe’s apparent Luddism are many and complex. In some countries there is a gen...
متن کاملWhich Sustainability for Europe? Policy Dilemmas over GM Crops
As the term 'sustainability' is more widely adopted, its meaning becomes more contested. It encompasses divergent accounts of the problem to be solved. These accounts can be analysed according to a three-part taxonomy: an 'environmental management' view serves to mediate (or adjudicate) between neoliberal and community views. Such a heuristic device can help illuminate controversies in particul...

Does GM work? Is GM technology too imprecise? Are GM genes more unstable than resident genes? Is it necessary to produce many transgenic plants to obtain an acceptable one? Could GM derived food be more toxic, more carcinogenic, or nutritionally less adequate when compared to other foods? And what is the potential for GM technology to produce foods with enhanced nutritional content or reduced t...
متن کاملThe release of genetically modified crops into the environment. Part II. Overview of ecological risk assessment.
Despite numerous future promises, there is a multitude of concerns about the impact of GM crops on the environment. Key issues in the environmental assessment of GM crops are putative invasiveness, vertical or horizontal gene flow, other ecological impacts, effects on biodiversity and the impact of presence of GM material in other products. These are all highly interdisciplinary and complex iss...

Plans by local authorities, towns, national parks and even states in Europe to set up genetically modified free zones to stop the controversial crops being grown in their areas are in deep confusion following new EU guidelines announced last month. Combined with uncertainty over who would be legally liable if genetic contamination takes place and the World Trade Organisation's pending case agai...
